Rallye Engine

You may be forgivn for thinking the Rallye 8 valve is the same unit as is found in a million VTR Saxos. And I have to confess that fundamentally it is, but in several important areas it differs and these differences release 13bhp more (black top TU) in the Rallye.
Under the hood!
Firstly the Rallye runs with a Magnetti Marelli 8P ECU which has a 7250 rpm rev limiter (6500 ish on the VTR), it also runs a hotter cam than the VTR and a higher compression ratio (10.2:1 in the Rallye).
The gearbox is also set up with a lower final drive ratio making it slightly better geared than the GTi and vastly better than a VTR, at 80mph the rev counter is registering 4200 in top. This allows some 36mph in 1st, 62mph n 2nd, 91mph in 3rd, 116mph in 4th and a theoretical (standard power) limit of 120mph at 6050rpm in 5th though you have to take my word it is happy to do more, especially with mild engine mods.
Modifications on my engine are limited. I have fitted a replacement K&N filter element a Peugeot pattern Grp N exhaust system with de-cat, K&N oil breather (to overcome design flaw, not shown in pic), home brewed induction pipe and a FSE pressure regulator which was also fitted to defeat a design flaw, but has introduced so many more flaws and annoying traits, that if I had the money I would revert back to a new standard unit.
I plan to build a new engine for this car in the not too distant future (funds available) as my current unit is headed for 90K and shall be over 120K by the end of next summer. I am still in two minds as to whether to fit a 16 valve GTi unit to the car or stick with the 8 valve standard unit. The spec of the proposed power plant is not in any way set, and may range from torquey 8 valver to high spec 16 valver to out and out supercharged monster. I'll just have to see what the future holds.
